Relief Carvings

One of my first carvings done with "primitive" tools compared to what I have today..

Another of my first carvings where I continued with the "letters" theme after acquiring some additional tools.

I carved this for a good friend who was being transferred to a new duty station back in the early '80s. Our work venue was the Food Service Division at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, And yes, the carving is sitting on the bumper of a 1976 green VW camper bus (peeking out in the background)!

I owned a Porsche in a former life (1971 -- 911S Targa) that was, and still is, my favorite automobile. This is one of my first "relief" carvings from years gone by (more than 30 of them). Note: In 1995, the ‘Porsche’ letters were made thinner and painted in black so they would stand out better against the gold background. This woodcarving reflects the emblem that was on my '71 Porsche not what you see on a Porsche emblem today.

I always wanted to carve the end of an oak whiskey barrel. As it turned out, the wood on the barrel I chose was so old that it seemed petrified and it was like carving stone! When I was finished I had to send my tools away to be professionally sharpened because I beat them up so badly. The spigot is from an old beer barrel from Germany. Hasen Braü is a beer made in Augsburg, Germany where I lived for three years. "Hasen" is "hare" (rabbit) in German.

Got bored one day and carved this symbol of tourism in Kentucky. It took me longer to find the right paint colors than it did to carve it.

This is a deep relief carving which started with instructor assistance (Randy Walters) and finished a couple of years later at home.

My daughter is a huge Harry Potter fan so this relief carving was made specifically for her.

This carving was completed in a class with John Engler. It is painted with water color paints instead of the acrylics I typically use.

This is another carving completed is a class with John Engler. It is also painted with water color paint..

A napkin holder which was done as a club project with Randy Walters..

Another of Randy Walter's relief designs.

This carving was completed in a class with John Engler and was given to an antique "car buff" friend at church. It is painted with water color rather than acrylic paint.
